Katie update: As of midnight she was out of surgery. She had a lot of bone taken out of her face and muscle put in for a cheek replacement. They told her mother to go home and go to sleep. They said she just doesn't look much like your Katie right now. Everything went well. There were few complications, the most dangerous is that the new cheek muscle is swollen and cutting off her air way so she is on a breathing tube. They are going to keep her heavily sedated for a few days so she can heal.
Our Katie is in surgery today. She was diagnosed with a brain stem tumor in November of 2006. She has gone through a great deal since then. They used radiation to greatly reduce the tumor but in so doing, they almost killed off her immune system and sent her home to die. She did not. She is a young woman with great faith. However she did succumb to a nasty fungal infection which has killed off a lot of the bone in her face. They also had to remove half of her palate to get at the fungal infection. Today's 10 hour surgery is to remove the rest of the dead bone in her face. It sounds like they are not going to remove the dead bone at the base of her skull. We are praying for her health and her recovery.
